What Is an IPL Photofacial?
IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light, and it's one of the most trusted and proven ways to refresh your skin without needles, surgery, or extended downtime.
It uses high-powered pulsed light to deliver precise wavelengths that penetrate deep An IPL Photofacial uses controlled pulses of broad-spectrum light to penetrate deep into the skin and target the root cause of common skin concerns: excess pigment and damaged blood vessels. Whether you're dealing with sun damage, age spots, redness, or an uneven skin tone that's been bothering you for years, IPL works beneath the surface to break down those imperfections and let your natural glow shine through.
.
The result? Skin that looks clearer, brighter, and more youthful — often with just a handful of sessions.
.
At iBeauty Med Spa, we offer IPL Photofacial treatments at both of our locations, each equipped with industry-leading technology selected for its proven performance and patient comfort.
How Does IPL Work?
Here's what happens during your treatment:
A trained provider glides a smooth handheld device across your skin. The device emits precise bursts of light energy that pass through the outer layer of skin and are absorbed by the pigment (melanin) in dark spots or by the hemoglobin in visible blood vessels.
Once absorbed, that light energy converts to heat and gently breaks down the targeted cells. Your body's natural healing process then clears away those damaged cells over the following days and weeks, taking your sunspots, redness, and uneven tone with them.
A cooling layer is applied to your skin before and during the treatment to keep you comfortable. Most patients describe the sensation as a brief, mild snap - nothing severe. The session typically takes about 30 minutes, and you can return to your regular routine the same day.
Results appear gradually and continue to improve as your skin heals. Many patients notice a visible difference within 1–2 weeks of their first session.
What Can IPL Photofacial Treat?
IPL is one of the most versatile light-based treatments available. It's especially effective for:
- Sun Damage & Age Spots – Those brown patches from years of sun exposure can be significantly lightened or eliminated entirely.
- Freckles & Hyperpigmentation – Uneven patches of color caused by melanin overproduction respond very well to IPL.
- Rosacea & Facial Redness – IPL targets the broken capillaries that cause persistent redness and flushing.
- Visible Veins & Vascular Lesions – Small, thread-like veins on the face can be visibly reduced.
- Dull or Uneven Skin Tone – IPL stimulates collagen production, improving overall skin texture and radiance over time.
- Post-Inflammatory Pigmentation – Dark marks left behind by acne or other skin trauma can be addressed effectively.
IPL is not a one-size-fits-all solution, and results vary depending on your skin type, concern, and the number of sessions completed. During your consultation, your provider will assess your skin and create a personalized treatment plan.

Lumecca is known for its ability to dramatically reduce pigmentation, sunspots, and vascular lesions with as few as one to two sessions. Its sapphire cooling tip keeps the treatment comfortable throughout, and its versatility makes it suitable for a wide range of skin types and tones.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many IPL sessions will I need?
It depends on your skin concerns and goals. Many patients see meaningful improvement after just one or two sessions. For more significant sun damage or persistent redness, a series of 3–6 treatments — spaced about four weeks apart — typically delivers the best, longest-lasting results. Your provider will give you a personalized recommendation at your consultation.
Is IPL safe for all skin types?
IPL works best on light to medium skin tones. During your consultation, your provider will assess your Fitzpatrick skin type and determine whether IPL is the right fit for you. If it’s not, we offer other effective options for your skin concern. Your safety always comes first.
Does IPL hurt?
Most patients describe the sensation as a quick, mild snap — similar to a light rubber band flick. It’s generally very well tolerated. Both of our IPL devices include built-in cooling features to keep you comfortable throughout the treatment.
What's the difference between Lumecca and Prisma Elite iQ IPL?
Both are advanced, medical-grade IPL systems from leading manufacturers, and both deliver excellent results. Lumecca (by InMode) is known for its high peak power and efficiency, often achieving results in fewer sessions. The Prisma handpiece on the Cynosure Elite iQ is known for its precise, customizable settings that give providers more control over treatment parameters. The best system for you simply depends on which location is most convenient — both will be delivered by our skilled, trained team.
How soon will I see results?
You’ll likely notice a difference within 1–2 weeks of your first session as treated spots fade and your skin tone begins to even out. Results continue to improve over the following weeks, especially with multiple sessions.
Is there any downtime?
Minimal. Most patients return to their normal activities the same day. You may experience some redness or slight swelling for a few hours. Treated pigmented spots may temporarily look darker before fading — this is completely normal and a sign the treatment is working.
